The Founder’s Story: RE LUMI

The "Half-Face" Experimenter

For me, beauty isn’t just a routine; it’s a personal journey of trial and error. If you saw me during those years of searching, you’d notice something strange: my face was always split in half. I had to compare everything. One eye would have brown mascara, the other black. One side volume, the other long-curl. I’d even wear a cool-toned pink on half my lips and a warm-toned pink on the other, or a shiny finish versus a matte. I’ve always had an obsessive need to find the absolute best—a trait that started with my childhood collections of Sailor Moon and never really left me.

The Foundation Paradox:
Why Does 8 AM Perfection Oxidize by 4 PM?

I tried everything first—every brush shape, every bristle type, and every sponge imaginable. But I kept failing. One day it worked, the next day it didn't, and I started to think I just lacked the 'skill'. Foundation became the hardest part of my routine. Yet, I knew that without a flawless base, no point makeup could truly shine. Through my years of learning, I realized what most professional artists believe: the base, eyebrows, and lips are the most critical elements of a face, and the base is the canvas for everything else.

While I was a nomad in every category, foundation was where I suffered the most. I was obsessed with solving its mystery: why did the same product look perfect at 8 AM, only to oxidize, darken, and melt away by the afternoon? I bought bottle after bottle, eventually losing count, only to feel the crushing guilt of throwing them away nearly full when they expired.

The 'Eureka' I Found in the Wrong Aisle

The breakthrough came when I discovered makeup spatulas. Using a basic one for the first time gave me a glimpse of hope—was this finally it? That curiosity led me to dive deeper, researching Korean makeup communities and niche threads on Reddit to see if something even better existed.
I eventually discovered art spatulas—a secret known only to a small circle of die-hard beauty enthusiasts—and had my 'Eureka' moment. The sheer thinness of the application these tools achieved completely ignored the claims of standard makeup spatulas. It provided a level of perfection I had never seen before. (I have so much more to say about the benefits of a thin base, but I’ll save those details for our future Beauty Posts and Instagram!)
However, the limit was clear. These were art tools, not skin tools. The materials weren't necessarily skin-friendly, and the unrefined wooden handles were a nightmare for hygiene. Using them on my face felt like using a box cutter to slice bread or office scissors to cut a pizza—it just felt wrong. After all, our face is where we want to feel our most beautiful and is also our most sensitive area—I refused to use anything that wasn't safe and designed for the skin.
When I decided to create my own, I spent 12 months refining the angles and thickness based on every tool I’d ever tested, rejecting prototype after prototype.

A Tool That Machines Couldn't Build

I wanted one tool that could do it all. Because our skin thickness varies—around the eyes, the mouth, and the cheeks—the amount of foundation needed is different for every area. I realized that a single thickness couldn't handle every formula and every part of the face.

I wanted to capture both worlds in one tool: the familiar, stable thickness of a conventional makeup spatula and the ultra-thin, near-perfect precision I had experienced with art spatulas. I wanted this duality in one small tool, but I was told it was impossible for a machine to do. So, we chose the hard way: Hand-finishing. It took a year of failed attempts to perfect that dual-edge—a level of detail that a machine alone cannot achieve.

Our Commitment: Premium Meets Eco-Conscious

Since the beginning of RE LUMI, being eco-conscious was my core mission. Having spent years as a beauty nomad, I felt a deep sense of guilt every time I tossed out a used tool or an expired bottle. Combined with the climate news and the extreme weather we experience daily, I knew RE LUMI had to be part of the solution.

For us, Premium Quality is the most effective form of Sustainability. To honor this commitment, we don't just look for durability; we are careful about our material selection. We insisted on 316L stainless steel, a material commonly used to make surgical tools. It is fully recyclable and designed for longevity. While the material itself is an investment, it was the only way to meet the level of hygiene and durability I demanded. This eco-conscious philosophy extends to every choice we make—from our selection of more sustainable puff materials to our recyclable covers—ensuring that we are as kind to the planet as we are to your face.

By choosing reusable or permanent high-quality materials over cheap, disposable ones, we are honoring both your beauty and the environment. I believe our small, conscious choices—like picking one permanent tool over dozens of plastic brushes—can create a butterfly effect that changes everything. This belief leads directly to my life’s philosophy: Mundane of Excellence.

The Core: Mundane of Excellence

I’ve never stopped exercising since I was 18. This long-standing commitment to a small habit has shown me that the cumulative difference made over decades is staggering. Whether it’s the simple habit of drinking a glass of water first thing in the morning or practicing a moment of mindfulness, these tiny, seemingly 'powerless' actions hold more strength than any single dramatic event. True greatness isn't about one grand gesture; it’s about the small, positive habits we keep. A series of tiny fixes eventually becomes who you are. This is the very root of RE LUMI.

To give you a concrete example of this impact, let’s look at the numbers. There are approximately 1.5 billion people globally who use makeup regularly. Even if we conservatively estimate that only 30% of them use foundation brushes, that’s 450 million people. If each of these users discards just two brushes a year, that’s 900 million brushes entering landfills every single year. If just 10% of that brush-using population chose a permanent spatula today and used it for the next 10 years, we would save 90 million brushes from landfills annually. (Wait! This isn't a sales pitch to make you buy a spatula—it’s just my inner nerd helping you with the math of our collective impact. ;) )

Beyond the environmental impact, there is the immediate, personal 'Excellence' you feel every morning. The satisfaction of a flawless, near-perfect base and the added confidence it brings to your day will add a positive ripple effect to your morning, your day, and even your life—one that might be even more impactful to you right now than the thought of decreasing landfills. RE LUMI’s goal is to offer a better solution that changes the result without compromising your routine. We want to provide the options that make your everyday life slightly better, one choice at a time. That is why our brand motto is the same as my lifetime mantra: Mundane of Excellence.

I have so much more to say about our puffs and the intentionality behind them, but I’ll save those stories for our blog and Instagram to keep this short. I am so excited for the narrative of 'Beauty that is kind to all' that we will write together. We invite you to join us on this journey!
